Sleeping bag rating clarification:

The Susitna 100 requirement for a sleeping bag is:

A one piece sleeping bag (no combination of liners) rated to -20 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees below 0 degrees Fahrenheit, =28.8 degrees below 0 degrees Celsius). Many sleeping bags now are rated by the EN 13537 testing standard.

To use this rating system to meet the Susitna 100 requirement, look at the “lowest limit of comfort”. Please note, this is NOT the “T extreme”. Information about the EN 13537 is available on the European Outdoor Group website. If you have questions about the application of this rating to the Susitna 100 sleeping bag requirement please e-mail  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

SPOT-Satellite Personal Outdoor Tracker

Do you worry about your friend or relative participating in the Susitna 100?  Are the race web site updates just not enough information?   With the SPOT turned on, you can continuously check his or her progress throughout the race from the comfort of your desktop or laptop computer using Google Earth.

Last year, I saw several racers starting their SPOTs at the start line.

Susitna Energy Systems is offering $10 off the purchase of a new spot if you mention Susitna 100 when you purchase.  Your price will be around $140. It also requires an annual activation fee of $100. Get one now and you and your racer can become familiar with its operation before race day.   Chances are, your racer spends quite a bit of time in the wilderness and can use this device year-round.  Susitna Energy Systems is our Flat Horn Lake Checkpoint host.  Their store is located at 2507 Fairbanks St. in Anchorage. Phone: 907-337-1300
